FIRE WATCH
W ill there be another Awakening? In five
centuries we have had two. The Great Awakening in the
18th Century swept the Colonies and prepared the
fledgling United States of
America to withstand the
mightiest military power on earth.
At
the dawn of the 19th Century, the Second Great
Awakening broke out simultaneously on the Kentucky frontier in the
west and the camp of Yale in the east. The Finney Revival in
the 1830’s was a fresh wave of that Awakening, as was the
Men’s Prayer Revival of 1856-57, without which
America could not
have survived her civil war.
Both
outpourings of God’s Spirit were essential to spiritually
strengthen our nation to endure the cataclysmic events about
to befall her. Many of us sense a time of great darkness
approaching, have been led to pray urgently for revival.
Not
without effect – there have been outbreaks of “revival
measles,” as at Toronto and
Pensacola. But there has not
been a big-R Revival, the kind that turns whole cities upside
down. And that is what many of us are now asking for – a
Category 5 Revival. A third Awakening that will alter the face
of America.
We
know God can do it. It remains to be seen if He
will do it. The requisites He stipulated in II
Chronicles 7:14 have not changed. Before He will pour out His
Spirit and heal our land, there must be deep repentance
and anyone

ever gone
camping in an old-growth pine forest knows that they must
double-douse their cooking fires, soaking them and then
re-soaking them, lest a single spark escape and smolder under
the thick carpet of pine needles.A fire can burn there
undetected for days or even weeks, spreading – everywhere.
Then suddenly, in many places a conflagration bursts
forth.
That analogy well fits the coming Awakening. It has
been smoldering under the carpet and spreading. Soon it will
engulf us in flames on all sides.
